KEOKUK - The murder trial of a 25-year-old Fort Madison man is set to begin Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. in south Lee County Court.

Adam Golden McCain, 25, is charged with the stabbing death of CaLove Sackman, then 27, of Keokuk in February. The two had been in a relationship prior to the woman's death.

McCain is currently in the Lee County Jail on a $1 million cash bond.

Pretrial conferences wrapped up Monday in South Lee County Court in front of District 8B Chief Judge Mary Ann Brown.

In September, Brown ruled against McCain's efforts to have testimony given during his arrest on Feb. 5, stricken from the record. His attorney, James Beres out of the Burlington Public Defender's office, claimed investigators tricked McCain into giving incriminating information to officers as he spoke with a family member using one of the investigators' phones.

State law allows and requires those holding individuals in custody to be present when any phone calls are made during an arrest and subsequent questioning.

Lee County Attorney Ross Braden and 1st Asst. Jonathan Stensvaag are prosecuting the case for the state.

According to arrest records, McCain was arrested by Lee County Sheriff Joshua Wade during the late evening hours of Tuesday, Feb. 5. Wade had pulled in behind McCain's disabled vehicle and dispatchers matched the vehicle and description to a suspect Keokuk Police were looking for in connection with a hit and run.

During Wade's questioning of McCain, additional information came to LeeComm that McCain could also be a suspect in a stabbing that occurred the same night in the mall parking lot in the 300 block of Main Street in Keokuk. McCain was taken into custody and taken to the Keokuk Police Department, where he was later transferred to the Lee County Jail for interrogation where he was held.

McCain is from the Keokuk area, but was staying with relatives in rural Fort Madison at the time of the alleged crime.
