CLIVE, Iowa — A Lee County man said his wife didn’t believe him when he told her he won a $10,000 lottery prize.

Richard Hertlzer, 70, of Fort Madison, won the second top prize in the Iowa Lottery’s “Naughty/Nice” holiday scratch game. He purchased his ticket at Hy-Vee, 2606 Ave. L in Fort Madison, and scratched it in the store.

“Boy, I got weak in the knees,” he said Tuesday as he claimed his prize at the lottery’s regional office in Cedar Rapids. “It said, ‘You win $10,000.’ I had to use their kiosk machine to verify it. I was pretty excited.”

Hertzler said he was eager to get home to tell his wife, Sherry.

“She couldn’t believe it either,” he said. “She had to take a double-take. She says, ‘That doesn’t happen to us! That’s got to be a fake ticket or something.’”

Hertzler said he plans to pay off his wife’s medical bills, give some money to their daughter and invest the rest.

Naughty/Nice is a $2 scratch game. It features 12 top prizes of $10,000 and overall odds of 1 in 3.91.

Nonwinning holiday scratch tickets can be entered into the lottery’s Ho Ho Dough Play it Again® promotion from now through 8:59 a.m. on Jan. 7. The promotion includes $200,000 in cash prizes. Tickets can be entered online or through the LotteryPlus mobile app. For rules and complete details, visit www.ialottery.com
