Settles reaches finals at Keen Invitational

INDEPENDENCE - Bloodhound senior Danen Settles took runner-up in the 285 lb bracket at the Cliff Keen Independence Invitational Friday and Saturday in Independence Iowa.

Settles lost to Taven Rich or Maquoketa, the top seeded heavyweight at the tourney, in the championship match. Rich scored a take down 10 seconds into the match and then was able to get the pin 20 seconds following the take down.

Settles went 5-1 on the day with four of the wins coming via pin. His toughest match outside of the loss in the finals was a 3-0 decision over Errol Alden of Iowa City West. Settles got a take down with just 12 seconds left in the first period and then escaped after starting down for Period 2. Alden got a stall warning in the final two minutes before Settles was able to run out the clock.

Sophomore Gavin Wiseman had the next highest finish for Fort Madison over the two-day tournament, with an 11th place finish at 132 lbs.

Wiseman was seeded 13th after going 2-1 in pool wrestling. Wiseman lost in round 3 to Brody Lee of Fennimore by fall with :36 left in the match. Wiseman would lose his first match Saturday to Pleasant Valley's Hunter Meyrer by a 12-1 decision, but Wiseman would win his next three matches in through the consolation side and won 11th place with a pin of North Fayette Valley's Levi Lauer :50 into the 2nd period. Wiseman was up 10-0 at the fall with two 3-point near falls in the first period.

Jakob McGowan went 4-3 on the day and placed 13th overall at 152 lbs. Owen Kruse (120 lbs) and Tanner Settles (145 lbs) both finished 14th, while Emmett Kruse (106 lbs) and Will Larson (138 lbs) took 15th overall.
