Bloodhounds top 70 for first win of the year

FORT MADISON - Sophomore Dayton Davis broke out for 21 points, including 15 in the first half as Fort Madison got it's first win of the year 73-61 over Centerville Saturday at the Hound Dome.

The Hounds broke out of a two-game scoring slump where they averaged just 38 points while giving up 61 points per outing. Senior Jayden Fedler scored 15 and senior Parker Denning had his best night of the year hitting 6-of-10 from the field including four 3-balls to finish with 16 on the night.

The Hounds raced to a 12-5 lead midway through the first quarter, but the Reds pulled off an 11-8 run and trailed by four with a minute left in the first quarter

The two teams played almost even basketball in the second and fourth quarters, but the first and third periods carried the Bloodhounds. Davis converted two 3-pointers in the first quarter and two more in the third quarter to help the Hounds keep the lead.

Centerville would close the gap to just five with about two minutes gone in the third period, but Fort Madison would stretch a 12-3 run to the fourth quarter and carry a 12-point lead into the final eight minutes of play.

The Reds would cut the lead to six at 61-55 with four minutes left in the game, but the Hounds would again find a 12-6 run to put the game away.

Sophomore Miles Dear finished with 10 points on the night, while Micheal Mosena added five, and Jace Burgher and Julian Navarro each had three points for Fort Madison.

Centerville Matt McDonald led all scorers with 30 points. McDonald converted 12 from the floor and went 6 of 7 from the free throw line.

Davis is averaging just right at 15 points per contest for the Hounds through three games. He's tied with Brody Bender tops in the conference in steals with 11 and has eight assists.

Jayden Fedler is averaging right at 11 points per game and leads the conference with nine boards per game and is a full nine rebounds ahead of anyone else in the conference with 27.

Davis and Parker Denning are 4th and 6th in the conference in 3-pointers with six and four respectively.

The Bloodhounds travel across state lines on Tuesday to take on West Hancock in Warsaw with a 6 p.m. junior varsity start time.
