KEOKUK - The Iowa Governor’s STEM Advisory Council directed additional support for the STEM BEST (Businesses Engaging Students and Teachers) Program through the STEM BEST Program Enhancement Fund to Keokuk High School to enhance school and business collaboration efforts.

The $10,000 grant will help enhance work-based learning opportunities made available through school and business partnerships during the 2019-2020 academic year.

The STEM BEST Program Enhancement Fund supports previously awarded STEM BEST Programs that demonstrated evidence of how the funds would enrich or expand current STEM BEST Programs, strengthen partnerships, enhance experiences for students and increase participation of students of diversity.

"This is in addition to the $50,000 grant we helped secure for the school through the STEM BEST Grant," said Lee County Economic Development Group's Dana Millard.

"STEM BEST focuses on community and business partnerships with students, giving them real-world experience and education."

Cheri Kemp, VERTEX Career Readiness Coordinator will be facilitating the 12 Plus One program this coming semester along with Dana Millard, who is the Lee County Economic Development Group Project Director. This grant will also provide time for science teachers at Keokuk High School to collaborate with their partners from Climax Molybdenum.

“This is a great opportunity for our KHS students to better prepare themselves for the workforce. It also allows us a variety of activities such as visiting our local industries and working on local projects,” said Cheri Kemp.

Millard said LCEDG will be starting it's next 12 Plus employability class at the Keokuk High School in January. For more informaiton visit the LCEDG's website at https://www.leecountyedg.com/.
