David Canby Fortado, 79, of Nauvoo, Illinois passed away at 1:30 A.M. Saturday, December 14, 2019 at the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center, LaHarpe, Illinois.
David was born on November 13, 1940 at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Jacksonville, Illinois the son of David and Lela Louise (Trotter) Fortado. On May 27, 1967 he married Jean Marie Wilson in Nauvoo. They later divorced.
David was a 1958 graduate of the Jacksonville Illinois High School. He graduated from Western Illinois University in 1964 with a Bachelor of Science in Education and earned his Masters Degree in 1971 from Northwest Missouri State University. David retired from the Nauvoo-Colusa High School where he was a Coach, Physical Education and Drivers Education teacher. David enjoyed golfing, winemaking, gardening and socializing. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Illini fan.
Survivors include four children, David M. Fortado of Nauvoo, Tom (Stephanie) Fortado of Nauvoo, Sandi (Kumar Wickramasingha) Barker of Fort Madison, Iowa and Debbie Wiseman of Fort Madison; thirteen grandchildren, Tony, Tyler, Cole and Austin Fortado, Catelynn, Marshall, Anna and Lennon Barker, Elizabeth Wickramasingha, Alicia Ramatowski and Jillian, Gavin and Henry Wiseman.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Pam Fortado.
A memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, December 19, 2019 at Schmitz-Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Nauvoo with Pastor Mark Anderson officiating. Friends may call after 1:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. until time of services.
A memorial fund has been established in his memory.
