WINFIELD - Holy Trinity led from the tip-off, but barely hung on for a 45-42 win over Winfield-Mt. Union Thursday in a make-up game from Saturday.

Vasin Thurman again led the Crusaders from the post with 15 points on the night in the Southeast Iowa Superconference matchup.

HTC jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead and led 14-9 at the end of the first period. The Crusaders moved the ball around the perimeter, but were finding success working the ball inside to Thurman, Matt Hellige and Quentin Schneider.

It was the first time all year, the Crusaders didn't connect on a 3-pointer in a game.

Holding a six-point lead to start the third period, Winfield started to cut into Holy Trinity's lead with a 13-8 3rd quarter advantage, getting six points from senior Ty Yocum inside.

Winfield would continue to nip away at the Crusaders cutting the lead to one at 38-37 with five minutes remaining. The two teams would exchange buckets and then would be deadlocked at 40-39 until there was less than a minute to go.

Jason Thurman hit a couple of key free throws down the stretch to help the Crusaders pull away for the win.

Chandler Rung, Hellige and Quentin Schneider all had eight points on the night. Jason Thurman finished with four and Blake Crabtree had a bucket to round out the scoring. Christian Gerot had 12 for Winfield (4-8). Yocum finished with 11.

The Crusaders (5-7) are just past the halfway point on the year. Vasin Thurman leads the team in scoring at just over 10 points per outing. Head Coach John Hellige runs a six-man rotation and all five of the others are close to eight points per game.

Vasin Thurman is also leading the squad in assists with 41, followed by Jason Thurman with 31. Schneider and Vasin Thurman share the team lead in rebounds with 82 a piece.

HTC boys and girls take on Fort Madison Saturday at the Hound Dome. The game will feature the annual FMHS Athletic Boosters' Cake Auction between games and at halftimes of the girls and boys varsity contests. The junior varsity teams start at 2 p.m. with varsity action set for 4:15.
