No. 3 WACO rolls up Central Lee boys

DONNELLSON - Nik Coble put up 19 points, 14 in the first half as Class 1A No. 3 WACO downed Central Lee 63-47 at home Friday night in boys high school basketball action.

It was pretty much the Warrior's game from the start, but Central Lee was able to keep Noble in check in the first period. Four other Warriors were able to score to take a 14-11 first quarter lead.

The Hawks (2-12) put up four in the final minute of the quarter to erase a 14-7 deficit.

Coble was able to shake off the Hawks defense in the second and put up 12 points as WACO took off for a 38-16 halftime advantage.

The Hawks weren't able to cut into the lead the rest of the way as WACO would push the lead to as high 26 in the fourth period.

Derick Denning led Central Lee with 13 points on then night. Dylan Stuecker had nine, Seth Mayes had eight, while TJ Stutes, Bronson Sargent, and Alex Sandoval each had five. Kade Myhre had a bucket to round out the Central Lee scoring.

Braden Hammond had 11 and Pietro Vannini had 10 for WACO, who received a vote as the top Class 1A team in the state in this week's rankings.

The Hawks knocked off Van Buren on the road Tuesday night 49-46. Central Lee had to hold off a wild rally from the Warriors after going into the fourth quarter up by seven.

Van Buren cut the lead to two at 44-42 with two minutes left in the game, but Sargent, Stuecker and Denning combined to go 5-of-6 at the free throw line in the final minute to put the game away.

Stuecker and Stutes led the Hawks with 12 points each. Sargent had 11. Jonah Heckenberg led all scorers with 17 for Van Buren (3-10)
