Albert L. “Al” Stevenson, 87 years, of Fort Madison, Iowa died 1:15 am Tuesday, February 18, 2020 at the Kensington, Fort Madison, Iowa.  He was born July 27, 1932 at Adrian, Illinois, a son of Frank and Cecelia (Schmitz) Stevenson.  On December 19, 1951, he married Joan Hull at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Carthage, Illinois.  She preceded him in death on August 31, 1994.  They were married for 43 years.

Al attended a one room school house through the 8th grade and then graduated from the Colusa High School in 1950. He was a U.S. Naval veteran, serving from 1951 to 1955 on the USS Monssen DD798 San Diego. While in the military, Al worked for the U.S. Hospital Corps School in the Emergency Department and in admissions at the U.S. Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, Virginia. After the service, he returned home and farmed. He also worked for the first Hancock County Ambulance Service at Memorial Hospital, Carthage, Illinois and for Dr. Coeur in the pharmacy department. In 1973, he and his family moved to Bowling Green, Missouri. He worked at Niemeyer Tractor and Jennings Implement in sales and machinery. In 1992, he moved to Wayland, Missouri to work at Fox Valley Equipment, retiring in 1996. He was a member of the Eagles, Moose, life member of the Knights of Columbus and a founding member and past president of the Quail Forever, Great River Chapter 3021. He was of the Catholic Faith. He loved fishing, hunting, and spending time with his family. He enjoyed life to the fullest.

He is survived by two sons, Anthony (Cathy) Stevenson, of Niota, Illinois; Douglas (Sandy) Stevenson, of Nauvoo, Illinois; two daughters, Pamela (Douglas) Knowles, of Nauvoo, Illinois; Carol Jeffries, of Fort Madison, Iowa; one brother, Richard (Nancy) Stevenson, of Florida; one sister, Sara (Richard) Foster, of Illinois; one son-in-law: Bryan (Debbie) Fessler, of Muscatine, Iowa; one sister-in-law, Emerald Stevenson, of Burnside, Illinois; twelve grandchildren: Bill (Cicily) Knowles, John (Kendra) Knowles, Ryan (Heather) Stevenson, Aaron Stevenson, Lindsey (Toby) Wagner, Nick (Michelle) Jeffries, Joni (Shane) Manning, Melissa Jeffries, Jared Fessler, Jenna (Zach) Richards, Amanda (Ryan) Stevenson-Cosgrove, and Jacob Stevenson; 14 great grandchildren: Aadyn, Adelyn, Cooper, Millie, Mason, Lauren, Eliza, Keller, Avery, Harper, Emerson, Isabella, Elliana, and Branz, several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Joan, one daughter Ellen Fessler, one son-in-law Jay Jeffries, three brothers: Robert, Donald and James Stevenson, one sister Betty Ward, and two infant sisters. 

Per his wishes, his body has been cremated. Family greeted friends Friday February 21, 2020 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison. Memorial services followed at the Barr Memorial Chapel with Pastor Dave Poland officiating. Burial with full military rites was in Thornber Cemetery, Powellton, Illinois. A memorial has been established for the Great River Honor Flight and the Great River Quail Forever Youth Program, contributions may be made at the Barr Memorial Chapel.
