Central Lee updates end-of-year plans

The following is an update from Central Lee Community School District Superintendent Dr. Andy Crozier printed in it's entirety

Central Lee Family,
We want to keep you updated on our services during school closures. Please see below for the latest information:

Graduation Events
We have been working behind the scenes to determine the best way to honor our senior class. Below are a few events we are planning:

Senior Graduation Video: We will record a simulated graduation, providing each senior with the opportunity to walk across the stage in their cap and gown and receive their diploma. Our video will also include senior speakers, the senior song, and the usual pomp and circumstance. To make this happen, we will ask each senior family to come in individually and record the events in separate settings. We will then have the Donovan Group, a professional communication firm, complete the editing and turn the video into an actual production of graduation. While it’s not an ideal solution, we hope to capture graduation for our seniors to have forever. The video will be posted publicly at a later date for all to view.

Senior Parade: We are planning a senior parade on the original graduation date of Sunday, May 17. The parade will go through Montrose and Donnellson. We will have more details in the near future and will require all participants to adhere to social distancing guidelines.

Live Graduation: In addition to the simulated graduation, we hope to host a live graduation for our senior class at some point. We are planning an event for Sunday, June 28 at 2 p.m. on the football field. Guest participation will be determined by state and CDC guidelines at that time.
We know there are also other events associated with graduation, and we will provide you with updates soon. After speaking with the senior class last week, we feel confident in our plan and hope that it helps honor the hard work our students have demonstrated over the past several years.

“Light Up Central Lee”
Would you like to help honor the senior class? On Friday, May 1, we will host “Light Up Central Lee.” The event will be held on school grounds and will require families to stay in their vehicles. We plan to turn on all lights at our athletic fields, parking lots, and school buildings from 8 p.m. to 8:20 p.m. to honor the 2020 senior class (8:20 p.m. on military time is 20:20).
We will be passing out FREE popcorn for families while playing music and announcing messages for our seniors over the football field PA system. The elementary parking lot will be accessible and we will be passing out treats from the K-8 as well. We will start passing out popcorn at 7:30 p.m. We hope you can join us!

Supplemental Learning
Supplemental learning resources continue to be available online, and we’re mailing out more than 300 packets to families each week. We strongly encourage all students to engage in these activities. Many families have done an excellent job so far. Any work you do now will limit any regression in learning students might experience this August when we return to school.
We are beginning to work on our “Return to Learn” plan, as required by the Iowa Department of Education. We hope to offer summer school for students in early August. This will be designated for our highest-risk students. High school credit recovery will continue to take place online through the summer, as well. Lastly, iReady reading and math will be available throughout the entire summer, and families will be allowed to keep their iPads during this time.

High School Grades
Our high school will give out letter grades for the second semester. Letter grades will consist of third-quarter work and any assignments/exams that have been finished or revised since our school closure. Students may apply for Pass/Fail on grades if they desire.
Please note that students must have an economic or health hardship that has limited their ability to finalize or redo any third-quarter assignments or exams. Mrs. Herdrich will be sending out more information about this to high school families soon. We will also post this information to our COVID-19 website.

Student Items
We are busy collecting students’ items and organizing them for you to pick up later in May. We will release information soon on how we will move forward with this process. In the meantime, you may want to start organizing textbooks, library books, and other end-of-the-year items that need to be returned to school. We will likely pass out items and have you return items on the same day.

Meal Service
Meal service will continue through May 29. We are currently providing three meals on Sunday and two meals on Wednesday. Each meal contains breakfast and lunch. We prepare nearly 4,000 meals per week for our community. If you get a chance, please thank our nutrition staff and transportation staff for their tremendous efforts!

Internet Access
We have installed a Wi-Fi extender that allows students and parents to access high-speed internet in the high school parking lot. While we understand it is not a perfect solution, it may help a little during this time.
If you have issues logging onto our Wi-Fi, please contact Technology Director Kris Brewer at kbrewer@centrallee.org. If you do use our Wi-Fi in the parking lot, please adhere to social distancing guidelines.

Please let us know if there is anything else we can do to support you during this challenging time. Once again, thank you.

Sincerely,
Dr. Andy Crozier, Superintendent
