Letter to the Editor - Tony Keefe pledges to be there for District 1 residents

Posted

My name is Tony Keefe and I am running for Lee County Board of Supervisors as a District 1 candidate because I think you need better representation in county government. For too long the voices of Lee County have gone silent because you are feeling like your voice is not heard, so why speak up. I am going to change that. I think every voter in Lee County deserves the same amount of weight in their thoughts and opinions. The family farmer has equal weight as the millionaire CEO. The cop on the road protecting our lives and our families has equal weight to the person who works in the private sector. We can all disagree on the outcome, but all your voices need to be heard. It is time to speak your mind and make a change, for the better. The residents of District 1 have gone too long with idle representation and it is time to speak up.
My plan is simple: I am going to contact as many constituents as possible during my first year as Supervisor. Hopefully by then this COVID-19 virus will pass and our communities will be open again. It is my hope that being available in person, by phone, by email will give you the means to communicate your thoughts and ideas with me.
My goals are important: My goals are important because they are your goals. We all want to see Lee County become a better place to raise our families and to live in peace. We want to be able to make a decent living by doing what we love to do. We want to be able to travel decent roadways to see family, do business at our public buildings 5 days a week, and be able to show our children that living in Lee County is great.
I grew up in Lee County. I attended college in Dubuque from 2002-2007 and moved back because I knew that I wanted to raise my family in Lee County. I wanted to come back to my community because I had so many great memories growing up here. From riding in the combine as a child with the farmer that farmed my grandpa’s fields to playing town ball with my lifelong friends is what called me back to Lee County. I want that to be the same experience for my kids. I want them to be able to attend a post-secondary school and want to come back to Lee County. I want them to see why Lee County is a great place to raise a family.
I experienced a loss in my life that affected me more than I thought it would. But one thing that came out of it was my deep love for my neighbor. When someone experiences loss or hardship, you count on family to bring you up. This of course happened but I witnessed something extraordinary when the people around me supported my family during our grief. The outpouring support to my family and to my extended family was overwhelming. This is the definition of service and one of the reasons why I decided to run for this office. No matter who you are or what part of the county you live in, you deserve to have someone help you out in your time of need, whether it is government related or not. A friend recently cautioned me that my heart was too big, and I needed to figure out a way to compartmentalize my feelings for others when they need help. I do not think that is a person I could become. I work in public service right now for that reason.
It is important to remember as you go to the polls on June 2nd, or fill out your absentee ballots, the candidate that is pledging to be there for you during your time of need is Tony Keefe.
