Hawks hold off WB in eight innings

DONNELLSON – Central Lee took advantage of a two-out throwing error to walk away with a 2-1 win extra inning affair Thursday night over visiting West Burlington.

In the bottom of the eighth, Tommy Eschman, who had come in to pinch run for Luke Simmons and advanced to second on a Adam Boeck’s ground out to 2nd, took off for third with two outs and a 1-1 count on Corbin Pohren.

The Falcons’ catcher Brady Diewold threw down to Zach Krantz at third to catch Eschman, but the throw sailed into left field allowing Eschman to come home with the winning run.

The win keeps Central Lee perfect at 5-0, with a tough test today at 1 p.m. in Donnellson against 6-1 Fort Madison.

Dylan Stueker went seven innings for the Hawks striking out 10 Falcons, while giving up eight hits and one walk. Evan Pohren came on in the eighth and gave up one hit and no runs to get the win.

The Hawks got things going when the Falcons committed three errors in the bottom of the first. TJ Stutes got on when he was hit by Gabe Zurita. An error on Zurita allowed Stutes to move to second. Then back-to-back errors by the Falcons’ Hayden Vandenberg at third allowed Stutes to come around to score before Simmons would strike out swinging.

West Burlington would get the run back in the top of the 2nd. Vandenberg started by doubling Boeck’s first pitch to center. Ty Hill would single to left moving Vandenberg up, and Krantz would send an RBI single to center scoring Vandenberg with no outs.

Stueker would get Diewold to fan, and then Simmons would catch Hill trying to swipe second before Riley Ruther would strike out to close out the inning.

The Hawks would have two on with two out in the bottom of the second, but Zurita would get Johnny Snider looking at a third strike to strand Stueker and Corbin Pohren.

Both pitchers would breeze through the third inning and Stueker retired the top of the fourth in order.

Simmons and Boeck would work a walk to start the bottom half of four. Eschman, again in a pinch-runner role, would get thrown out at second for the first out, but Falcons’ coach Pat McKasson brought Vandenberg on in relief of Zurita. Stueker would stroke a single to left moving Boeck to 2nd.

Vandenberg would get Myhre to strike out swinging and Pohren to ground out to first to strand Boeck and Stueker.

Stueker would get the first two outs in the bottom of the fourth, but Caleb Allen and Tate Nelson would both single to center. Jace Figuereo singled off Stueker at the mound loading the bases, but Zurita would pop out in foul territory leaving all three Falcon runners on the bases.

Central would put two more on with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, but Vandenberg would get Myhre swinging again to end the inning.

Stueker would retire the side in the top of the 7th and Vandenberg would give up a single to Pohren and a walk to Stutes, but would get Jadon Hawk to fly out to second to force the extra inning.

Stueker led the Hawks at the plate going 2-2. Corbin Pohren and Simmons had the only other hits for Central Lee.

Vandenberg led West Burlington (2-3) going 2-4 with two doubles and run scored. Hill and Figuereo each had two singles for the Falcons. Vandenberg suffered the loss on the unearned run giving up three hits and five walks against four strikeouts.
