WEST BURLINGTON - Central Lee's Sophie Turner and West Burlington freshman Lauren Summers had things under control for almost five innings, but West Burlington would break out in the bottom of the fifth and pull away for a 4-0 shutout Thursday in a Southeast Iowa Superconference showdown.

Zoe Eschman started the game with a double to center, but she would get stranded as Summers would get the next three Lady Hawks to strike out swinging to retire the side.

Reagan Engberg would then start the bottom half with a hit to right, but Turner would settle in and get the next three outs to sit the Lady Falcons down.

Turner would get right back to it striking out the next two Central Lee hitters, before Sophie Turner grounded out to end the bottom half of the second.

Central Lee would put two on with one out in the top of the third. Makayla Morrison and Eschman would both single, but would get stranded when Macy Watkins fouled out and Daly Brisby fanned.

Neither team would get much going in the fourth and Central Lee was retired in order in the fifth.

Elise Oleson singled and Abby Bence would come in as the runner in the bottom half of five. Anna Engberg would ground out to Watkins at second moving Bence to second. Raven Messamaker reached on a bunt that moved Bence to third and then Reagan Engberg would ground out to Turner at the mound for the second out with Bence holding at third.

Addyson Kellen would then triple to deep center plating Bence and Messamaker with two outs. An error on an infield fly to short allowed Summers to reach and Kellen to score. Madelyn Stutsman would fly out to right to kill the inning.

The Hawks would finagle a walk in the sixth, but couldn't bring the run around and then the Falcons' Logan Kelly homered to center to set the final score with no outs in the top of the 7th.

Summers would get Megan Hopp to pop out to second and Turner to ground out to second before Andrea Benner fanned to end the game.

Eschman went 2-3, while Morrison and Buford had the other hits for Central Lee. Turner went the distance on the mound giving up four runs, three earned on eight hits and no walks. She struck out two.

Oleson went 2-3 for West Burlington. Messamaker, Kellen, Lauren Krieger, Stutsman, Reagan Engberg and Kelly had the other hits for the Falcons. Summer went the distance in the circle giving up four hits and one walk, while striking out 14 in the win.

Central Lee falls to 3-2 in the conference and 5-2 overall. The Burlington Grayhounds come to town on Saturday for a double header with a noon start.

West Burlington improves to 3-1 on the year and 3-0 in the Southeast Iowa Superconference South.
