Crusaders fall to Van Buren in seven

WEST POINT - After starting the season with two losses invoked by 10- and 12-run rules, the Holy Trinity Crusaders have taken their last five games the full seven innings including Monday night's 8-1 loss to Van Buren at South Park.

The Crusaders are 1-6 on the year and play at West Burlington tonight in a Southeast Iowa Superconference South Division matchup. The Lady Falcons are 5-1 and 4-0 atop the conference.

Van Buren jumped on top 3-0 through four innings before Holy Trinity could get going. The Crusaders threatened in the first with Brooke Mueller and Mary Hellige getting back-to-back, two-out singles, but Ally Campbell would get Kayla Box swinging to end the inning.

DiPrima would get a single in the bottom of the second, again with two outs, but a infield popup by Meierotte retired the side. Mueller would hit a two-out double in the third with no one one, but Campbell again worked out of the inning unscathed.

Hellige retired the side in order in the top of the third down 3-0. Box and Haily Cain would reach with no outs in the bottom of the fourth. Laura Mehmert would sacrifice both runners over. DiPrima would ground out to second scoring Box, and then Campbell would get Meierotto to ground out for a 3-1 Van Buren lead going into the fifth.

The Lady Warriors would add a run in the fifth when Lexi Jirak hit an RBI double to left. She would get called out on an interference two hitters later to end the side.

Holy Trinity couldn't get anything rolling in the fifth or sixth innings and Van Buren would tack three more runs on seventh before Campbell would retire the side in order in the seventh for the win.

Mueller led the Crusaders at the plate going 2 for 3 with a double. DiPrima had the lone RBI and Hellige went the distance in the circle for HTC.
