LEE COUNTY - A program that is infusing county businesses with cash, while giving residents a good return on local purchasing, wrapped up Wednesday with 500 gift checks sold in less than 30 minutes.

The Buy Lee County program has been met with overwhelming support from communities. The program allows individuals to purchase $30 in gift checks from Fort Madison or Keokuk chambers of commerce for just $20.

Through the four rounds, spread out one per month since May, over 2,000 certificates have been sold equaling $63,000 that will be spent in Lee County.

The first round in May sold 600 certificates in 48 hours, while the second in June sold 500 certificates in 24 hours. The July sales sold 500 certificates in three hours and the final round Wednesday resulted in the 500 checks selling out in less than a half an hour.

Funded by Lee County Economic Development Group, Keokuk Chamber and Economic Development and the Fort Madison Chamber, the certificates are accepted at 240 Lee County business. Certificates can be used at local restaurants, retail, or services from a Lee County business.

Purchasers are able to use the certificates throughout Lee County.

"This is a great program!" said Lee County resident Deb Holtkamp,

"Where else can you get that kind of a return on your money? They are easy to use and what a great promotion for Lee County businesses. We have used them throughout the county at: Shottenkirk’s, Huffman’s Farm and Home, Fareway, Hy Vee, Eagles, The Hawkeye and First Wok. It is nice that it is a check and easy for the business to just take to the bank."

Summer Day, owner of Younggren Shoes in Keokuk said, "We've seen over 50 Lee County certificates come through in the last couple months."

Day had to close Younggren doors due to COVID-19 however since their reopening in May, she has seen a steady growth in sales and feels the Buy Lee County campaign has contributed to that increase.

"I think it's really encouraging people to buy local and helping people see we have great stores right here so you don't have to go out of town."

Chamber Checks and Keokuk Kash have no cash value and cannot be redeemed for cash. For information on uses and expirations, please contact your local Chamber office.

If you purchased a Buy Lee County Certificate, the Fort Madison and Keokuk Chambers ask when you use the certificate, take a picture of you at the business, what did you purchase and show us how you are supporting your local community by positing on the chamber Facebook pages and using the hashtag #BuyLeeCounty.
