ISP K9 team takes first at USPCA certification

FORT MADISON - The Iowa DOC K-9 Units attended the United State Police Canine Association PD1 (Police Dog) Certification in Algona, Iowa. This certification tests the handlers' and their canines in the following areas: Obedience, Agility, Evidence search, Suspect search and Apprehension.

The Iowa State Penitentiary team consisted of Sergeants Steve Dill, Dustin Yager and Mike Barnes. They were joined by a Sergeant from Clarinda Correctional Facility, Jason Gibson. ISP Officer Bruce Billings participated by serving as a Decoy for the trials.

Sergeant Mike Barnes and K9 Justice placed first overall. Sergeant Dustin Yager with K9 Maverick placed Fourth overall, and Sergeant Steve Dill with K9 Rosco took Second place in Agility as well as Criminal Apprehension

Sergeant Jason Gibson placed second in Agility.

The ISP Team trains regularly with their K9s in each of these areas to ensure they are ready for their day-to-day work in the facility. This regular training ensured the ISP Sergeants came home with First Place Overall Team Trophy for the second year in a row.
