Gager second, Wiegand sixth at MP cross country run

Bloodhounds shelved at least until Oct. 3 due to COVID exposure

MT. PLEASANT - Fort Madison junior Will Gager is beating everyone except Washington's Lance Sobaski on the 5k cross country paths in southeast Iowa.

Gager took second at the Mt. Pleasant Cross Country meet Tuesday afternoon with a time of 17:39.29. He finished behind Sobaski at last week's Timm Lamb Invitational as well. Sobaski won the Mt. Pleasant meet with a time of 17:00.21.

Gager will get some time to rest up as both the boys and girls Bloodhound cross country teams are in a 14-day quarantine after an exposure was revealed Tuesday afternoon. Both teams can resume activities on Oct. 3 at the earliest.

Austin Miller came in third in the run with a time of 17:48.00 to help Fort Madison to a third place team finish with 63 points. The Bloodhounds didn't have another running in the top 10, but Anthony Barnes finished 11th, followed by Carson Rashid and Nathanial Swigart rounding out the scoring runners at 20th and 27th overall.

In the varsity girls run, freshman Paetyn Wiegand was top runner for Fort Madison completing the course in 22.28.15 good for sixth place overall. Mt. Pleasant's Abby Blint won the large-school run with a time of 21:13.28.

Jordyn Burch, Ellie Schulte, Raquel Schneider and Mylah Blanchard rounded out the scoring runners for Fort Madison. Burch and Schulte were both top 10 finishing 9th and 10th respectively. Schneider came in 16th place and Blanchard was 20th. The girls finished third overall with 60 points.

In the small class event, Central Lee's Amanda Gilpin finished 7th overall with a time of 22:38.96 to lead the Lady Hawks to a third place finish with 65 points. Addy Brumble and Brianna Gruntmeir were 19th and 20th overall. Adrienne Britt finished 24th and Olivia Kraus finished 28th for the Hawks' scoring runners.

Holy Trinity's Mitchell Pothitakis was 11th overall in the small class boys run with a time of 18:52.84. Chandler Rung was net at 30th overall with a time of 20:53.62. The three other scoring runners for HTC were Edward Schroeder (36th), Jacob Pothitakis (52nd), and Sheldon Kruse (54th).

The Crusaders finished 7th in the nine team field, Central Lee finished 9th as a team.

Landon Crank scored finished 32nd with a time of 20:57.62 to lead the Hawks. Grant Anderson finished at 21:04.09 for 35th overall. The other three scoring runners for Central Lee were Tristin Howell (43rd), Derick Denning (50th) and Aden Ross (51st).

In the junior varsity run, Central Lee's Jackson Denning finished 9th with a time of 22:40.65 and Landon Lowenberg was 16th overall. Holy Trinity's Conner Gehling and Maddox Rung were 20th and 21st to lead the Crusaders.

Tate Green led the way locally in the middle school 3200 meter run with a time of 13:25.72 for Holy Trinity. Layne Rung finished 18th overall. Leo Thomas was 21st for Central Lee and Weston Fraher was 23rd overall.
