DONNELLSON — There is always some pain when trying to build a football program.
But every loss can be an education.
Central Lee’s 59-0 loss to No. 2 (Class 2A) Williamsburg on Friday night was a hard lesson for the Hawks (0-7).
“Right now, Williamsburg is the type of team we want to emulate, and try to get to,” Central Lee coach Chuck Banks said. “That’s a great program with a lot of talent, and we want to get to that.”
Williamsburg (7-0) has allowed just 72 points all season, none in its last two games, and that defense kept the Hawks in check all night. Central Lee didn’t get into Williamsburg territory all game.
“At the end of the day, you have to put the ball (into the end zone),” Banks said. “We’ve been able to do that at times this year, but we couldn’t tonight.”
Williamsburg quarterback Levi Weldon threw for three first-half touchdowns as the Raiders scored on six of their seven possessions.
The Hawks had a solid opening drive, getting to their own 45-yard line with two first downs before a 7-yard sack of quarterback Dylan Stuecker on first down stopped the momentum.
Then Williamsburg got going. Riley Holt’s 45-yard run on the Raiders’ first play of the game set up his 2-yard touchdown run four plays later for a 7-0 lead.
Brody Wardenburg’s block of Stuecker’s punt on Central Lee’s next possession led to another touchdown, and then the Raiders scored on their next two possessions for a 28-0 lead.
The Hawks did get a three-and-out late in the first quarter, but couldn’t do anything on offense. A bad snap on a punt attempt gave Williamsburg the ball at the Central Lee 6-yard line, and Carson Huedepohl scored on the next play for a 35-0 lead.
That led to a running clock for the rest of the game. Williamsburg led 42-0 at halftime.
“At the end of the day we competed with the best of the ability for quite a while,” Banks said. “Now, I’m going to say we shot ourselves in the foot a couple of times. We just have to get over that hump.”
The Hawks find out at noon Saturday who they will play in the playoffs. Every team is in the postseason this season.
“These guys deserve to win. They’re a talented team that has just faced some tough breaks this year,” Banks said. “Our kids are ready. But we’re really banged up right now.”
