HTC girls win Pella Tourney title

PELLA - A 15-9 tiebreaker win over Pella (16-11) gave the Holy Trinity Crusaders the Pella Invitational title Saturday in Pella.

The Dutch took the first game 21-16, but the Crusaders came back with a 21-17 win in the second set to force the tiebreaker in final match of the day.

The Crusaders fell to Class 4A No. 14 Bondurant-Farrar 21-16, 21-18, but Pella knocked off the Blue Jays 21-16, 25-23 and then Knoxville beat Bondurant-Farrar to saddle them with two losses on the day.

Pella also finished 4-1 on the day.

Holy Trinity started the tourney with a 16-21, 21-11, 15-11 win over the Knoxville Panthers (20-4). The Crusaders also defeated Mediapolis 21-18, 21-8 at the tourney.

Junior Kassi Randolph was 84 of 86 attacking with 21 kills. She also had 25 assists and 18 digs for HTC and had eight blocks on the day.

Claire Pothitakis was the big hitter from the outside with 28 kills on Saturday going 72 of 81 at the net and was a perfect 35-35 serving with two aces. Maria Rauenbuehler led the Crusaders with 28 digs, followed by Taylor Crabtree with 26 and Pothitakis with 25.

Crabtree had a team-high five aces on 17-21 serving.

The Crusaders (21-8) played without senior Katie Denning who suffered an injury last week.

HTC travels to Danville on Monday night for a rescheduled match, then hosts Central Lee on Tuesday before traveling to Mediapolis on Thursday night to wrap up the regular season.

Post season action starts next week when the Crusaders will either host Highland or Lone Tree in the Class 1A Region 8 bracket.
