Lady Hounds pick up 1-point win over Pekin

PEKIN - The Fort Madison Bloodhound girls basketball team wedged in another basketball game on Monday and came out with a hard fought 1-point win over Pekin 33-32.

Malarie Ross led the Hounds with 18 points including three 3-pointers, two in the first half.

Fort Madison opened with a 5-point lead at 13-8 with less than a minute to go in the first quarter, but Pekin outscored Fort Madison 5-2 in the final minute to cut the lead to just two 15-13 at the end of the quarter.

Pekin would tie the game at 15 early in the second, but the Hounds would push the lead to seven with a 9-2 run of their own and would hold onto a 24-21 lead at the half.

Pekin would get within three at 26-23, but Ross would hit a 3-ball to make it a six-point game in the third. The Hounds would hold that lead until five minutes left in the game leading 31-25 when Pekin would mount a rally and outscore Fort Madison 7-1 to tie things up at 32.

Fort Madison would convert a free throw down the stretch to put the game away and move to 2-1 on the year.

Brandy Walker had five points in the contest. Nadia Boeding and Molly Knipe had three. Irelynd Sargent and Camille Kruse each had two points on the night.

Kerrigan Pope led Pekin with 10, Sophie Wittrock had nine for the Panthers.

In the junior varsity game, The Lady Hounds ran way with a 44-22 win led by Taylor Johnson's 11 points and Aija Jenkins 10. Isabella Boeding chipped in with eight. At one point Fort Madison was up 34-7 in the third period.
