KEOSAUQUA - Vasin Thurman didn't get to play tennis last year, so he found a different way to succeed around the net.

Thurman exploded for 24 points in the second half Tuesday night to lift Holy Trinity Catholic to a 64-40 win over Van Buren in Southeast Iowa Superconference boys basketball.

Thurman and his twin brother Jason, both qualified for state tennis in doubles as freshmen and sophomores, and then had their junior years taken away by COVID.

The win moves HTC to 3-0 to start the year, the first time that has happened since 2010-2011. The Crusaders also received five votes in the state Class 1A rankings by the Associated Press this week.

Van Buren held a 12-8 lead at the end of the first quarter as Thurman was trying to find his bearings in the post. Thurman had four in the first quarter, but would only manage four more in the second on four trips to the free throw line.

Kadin Medland and Jason Thurman would each convert 3-balls in the second quarter, while Mikey DiPrima and Chandler Rung would get in on the scoring action to spread the defense a bit.

Van Buren would get another 12 in the second quarter, but HTC would put up 16 to tie things at the half 24-24.

The Warriors made an adjustment to contain HTC's outside shooting and Thurman was able to take over inside scoring 13 of the Crusaders 18 third quarter points, while the defense held the Warriors to just eight.

Thurman would go for another 11 in the final period to help put the game away.

Rung had 11 on the night for HTC, while Jason Thurman finished with 10. DiPrima had six and Medland had five to round out the scoring.

Jaxon Manning had 13 for Van Buren (0-4) and Lane Davis had 10.

HTC travels to West Burlington (2-1) on Friday in boys/girls varsity double header with tip off at 6 p.m.
