Hounds escape with 1-point win at Centerville

CENTERVILLE - The Fort Madison Bloodhounds let a 16-point lead slip away, but held on for 72-71 win on the road Monday night in Centerville.

Fort Madison raced out to a 22-6 lead to start the second quarter behind junior Dayton Davis' nine first-quarter points. Tate Johnson had a couple 3-pointers in the first quarter and Miles Dear scored four to stake the Hounds to the large lead.

But the Big Reds would rally at the end of the second quarter with an 8-4 run that cut the lead to 38-29.

Brady Kauzlarich, scored nine in the second quarter including a 7-of-7 run at the free throw line to get Centerville back in the game.

Kauzlarich would continue to pester Fort Madison in the third period putting up 15 points to give the Big Red a 3-point lead at 54-51 going into the final period. On the night, the senior went 17-of-20 from the line and finished with a game-high 35.

Fort Madison would trail by as many as five through the fourth quarter, but would outscore Centerville 11-4 in the final two minutes to retake the lead and scored five in the final minute to get the win.

Junior Landes Williams put up two 3-pointers and Davis added another and a 3-point play down the stretch for Fort Madison.

Davis had a season-high 31 for the Hounds. Dear had 13 and Johnson scored 10 on the night. Landes Williams chipped in with eight for the Hounds, while Phillip Goldie added six. Leighton Rockhold and Nathan Swigart both had two points on the night.

Fort Madison moves to 2-2 on the year and travels to Keokuk on Friday in a Southeast Conference game. Centerville falls to 0-3 on the year.
