Davis, defense lead Hounds to second win in a row

KEOKUK - Head Coach Ryan Wilson said the Fort Madison boys basketball team has a goal of allowing less than 10 points in any quarter.

The Bloodhounds hit that mark again in Friday night's 48-36 win over Keokuk on the road in Southeast Conference basketball.

The Hounds (3-2) clamped down on Keokuk and scoring threat Anthony Potratz in the third quarter giving up just one field goal to 6-4 senior Boone Messer, after trailing by one point 22-21 at half time.

Bloodhound junior Dayton Davis, who led all scores on the night with 20 points, outscored Keokuk 12-11 in the final period to help Fort Madison pull away for the win. Davis has scored 51 in the Hounds last two outings combined.

Keokuk opened the game with a 13-9 lead hitting on three 3-pointers in the quarter, led by Potratz' five. He would finish with 13 to lead the Chiefs (3-2).

Fort Madison defense began to get sticky in the second period allowing just nine points, while Matt Hopper led a rally with a couple buckets for Fort Madison to close the gap. Hopper would finish with six points on the night, all in the first half.

Miles Dear has seven for Fort Madison, while Philip Goldie chipped in with five, Reiburn Turnbull, seeing his first action in three games after suffering an injury to his hand came off the bench to score four in the third period. Landes Williams had a key 3-pointer for all his points in the third and Tate Johnson added three points to round out the Hounds scoring.

MJ Davis had 10 for Keokuk. Callum Tackes added seven, Isaiah Seay had three, Messer finished with two points and Jordan Sisk added a point for the Chiefs.

Fort Madison has now won three straight after starting the year with two losses. They travel to Burlington Notre Dame on Saturday night.
