FORT MADISON - An offender at the Iowa State Penitentiary was hospitalized Friday after being stabbed in the head during an altercation with another inmate.

According to Cord Overton, an Iowa Department of Corrections spokesperson, at approximately 9:44 a.m. video footage showed an inmate approaching the cell of another inmate within their living unit. Upon entering the other inmate's cell, a physical altercation took place.

Staff in the area responded to the incident and found the inmate that entered the cell with significant injuries. After securing the unit, staff requested ambulance transportation for the injured inmate to Fort Madison Community Hospital.

A homemade sharpened object was recovered from the scene of the incident.

Lee County EMS transported the inmate to FMCH, but communicated ahead for air transport to be on the property. However, the victim was initially taken to the FMCH Emergency Room.

Attempts to reach ISP leadership Friday were unsuccessful and went unreturned.

The inmate that was originally in his cell was evaluated for injuries suffered during the incident, and treated for mild injuries by prison medical staff. At this time, it is believed that neither inmate suffered life-threatening injuries.

This incident remains under investigation.
