FORT MADISON - Fort Madison junior Gavin Wiseman laid off the holiday goodies and dropped a couple pounds over the break.

For his efforts, the 10th-rated 145 lb wrestler in Class 3A stepped onto the mat with Mediapolis' Quinten Aney, Class 1A's 8th-ranked wrestler at 138 lbs., in what turned out to be the match of the night as the Hounds swept a triangular in the Hound Dome.

Wiseman started with a quick take down for two points in the first period and then was able to ride out the first two minutes.

Aney had control from the top in the second period, but Wiseman was able to roll out of a hold with about :40 seconds for an escape to go up 4-0 at the end of two.

In the third, Aney scored a takedown and had Wiseman leveraged to push him onto his back, but the Bulldog left a door when he allowed Wiseman to roll over to his stomach and avoid the pin. The takedown and near fall cost Wiseman five points.

With about 15 seconds left in the match, Wiseman got free and was able to pull Aney over to the ground with just two ticks left on the clock for a takedown and a 6-5 win.

"This is the first time Gavin has wrestled at 138 this year. He made scratch tonight, so he'll get two pounds the rest of the year," Head Coach Ryan Smith said.

"He's been weighing light for 145. He was doing good, but made the decision to go down before the holiday and he could be stronger there. He was thinking about it before our tournament."

Smith said there was a little rust in the two matches after the holidays.

"Coming out of the break, it wasn't bad. I think they did a good job of showing the things they worked on over the break," Smith said.

Fort Madison won the first dual over Washington 62-9.

Daniel Sokolik (195) scored an 8-1 decision of the Demons Curtis Stender. Matthew Steffensmeier and Wiseman both recorded pins in the match. and Mason Schau recorded a 17-2 technical fall over Chase Greiner at 160.

Henry Wiseman suffered a close 5-4 decision to Jack Kleese at 106 and the Hounds suffered a forfeit at 285 for Washington's only points.

At 152 Teague Smith scored a quick pin in just :41, and Austin Ensminger pinned Kyle Vorwerk at 182 for Hounds wins on the mat against Mediapolis. Fort Madison won seven matches by forfeit for a 57-10 win.
