Hounds take 6th place at Gary Curtis Invite

HIGHLAND - The Fort Madison Hounds wrestling team was a late entry into the Gary Curtis Invite, but had nine wrestlers place on the way to a sixth place team finish.

The Bloodhounds found out early Friday that the Iowa City West Dual Invite they were originally scheduled for was canceled by that schools officials after a positive COVID case discovered with one of their wrestlers.

Fort Madison had allowed Highland a late entry into the the Bloodhound Invite several weeks ago, so Highland allowed the Hounds to compete on Saturday.

Fort Madison finished with 136 points behind Mid-Prairie, Wilton, Alburnett, Muscatine and tourney champ South Tama County, who finished with 173.

Gavin Wiseman, wrestling at 138 lbs. took 2nd place overall and Owen Kruse, a 2020 state qualifier, also earned a silver medal at 126 lbs..

After a bye, Wiseman won his next two matches with a pin and a 10-1 major decision over Muscatine's Mason Crabtree to reach the finals with Class 1A No. 2 Kael Brisker, who's ranked at 132 lbs.

Wiseman got the first take down at 1:30 in the first period for a 2-0 lead that he rode into period 2. Brisker would score a nearfall thirty seconds into the 2nd period, but Wiseman would record a reversal at :42, that Brisker would in turn reverse seven seconds later for a 5-4 lead going into the final period.

Brisker started down in the 3rd and scored a reversal and then got Wiseman's shoulders down with just under a minute left in the match.

Kruse also received a first round bye and then breezed into the championship match with two pins. He then suffered a fall to Alburnett's Brody Neighbor with just :17 left in the match.

Kruse suffered three takedowns in an active 2nd period, but escaped twice and trailed 11-5 after two periods, before Neighbor scored a quick take down to start the 3rd and was able to manipulate the fall.

Fort Madison senior Will Larson, also a 2020 state qualifier, getting his first live mat action since the holiday break after joining the team late, earned a third-place finish at 145 lbs.

Larson scored three near falls in the 3rd place match, two in the second period and one in the 3rd, for a 9-0 decision to take the bronze medal.

Senior Brock Califf earned fourth after falling in the 3rd place match by pin to English Valley's Ty Moore with just one second left in the first period.

The Hounds also got fourth place points from Mason Schau at 160 lbs. and Senior Austin Ensminger at 185 lbs.

Freshman Teague Smith and Isaac Thacher took 5th place at 152 lbs and 170 lbs, respectively. Daniel Sokolik earned a 6th place finish at 195 lbs to round out the Hounds scoring Saturday.
