BURLINGTON - The Burlington Grayhounds gave Fort Madison's girls all they wanted in the first half Friday night.
But Fort Madison pulled away in the second half behind Malarie Ross' 14 points to breeze to a 53-30. The Lady Hounds held Burlington to just seven points after the break and Ross finished with 27 on the night.
The Bloodhounds move to 10-1 overall and 4-1 in the Southeast Conference, a full two games in front of the field.
The Hounds couldn't shake things loose in the first half as Ariana Baylark scored regularly in the paint to keep Burlington close.
Fort Madison got six from Brandy Walker, also working in the middle, in the first half. Walker wouldn't score in the second half as the Grayhounds made some adjustment. Hounds Head Coach Tony Sargent also adjusted things at the break and held Baylark to just two in the second half.
His adjustments also freed up Bloodhound sophomore Camille Kruse, who got all eight of her points in the second half, the first two on a nifty fake to shake a defender in the lane and then pulled up for a five-footer to start the Hounds rally.
Kruse and Ross combined for 22 of the Hounds 29 second half points and the Hounds defense almost shut Burlington (0-6, 0-4 SEC) down completely with just two points allowed in the final period.
Nadia Boeding had five for Fort Madison, while Isabella Boeding added a three pointer in the second half for her points. Irelynd Sargent had four to round out the Bloodhound scoring.
Baylark had 12 for Burlington.
In the junior varsity game, Isabella Boeding had 11 to lead Fort Madison to a 53-18 win.
The girls travel to Holy Trinity Catholic for a cross-town matchup Saturday night with a 5 p.m. start.
