WACO spoils Hawks' Senior Night

DONNELLSON - WACO ruined a 24-point effort from senior Dylan Stuecker on Senior Night and the Warriors pulled away from Central Lee in the second half for a 68-62 win.

The Hawks had leads of as much as seven in the first half and closed out the half up 35-31.

But WACO stormed back in the third quarter outpacing Central Lee 16-11 and tied the game up at 42 with about two minutes left.

The Warriors would score the next five points to take 47-42 lead. The Hawks would answer with a 4-0 run to cut it to one again at 46-47.

The fourth quarter would amount to a free-throw shooting contest with both teams combining for just four field goals.

WACO would shoot a combined 15 free throws in the final eight minutes with Simeon Reichenbach going five of six, Jacob Eichenberger hit three and Hunter Hughes converted five of six to outpace the Hawks.

Senior Jaxon Betker went to the line eight times in the period and converted seven, but Central Lee couldn't get anything going from the field aside from two 3-balls from Betker and Stuecker.

The Hawks took the lead 51-49 on one of the 3-pointers but then gave up a 9-2 run to fall behind for good at 58-53.

Betker finished with 18 on the night, while Kaleb Sanders had 10 points, Derrick Denning had four. Corbin Pohren and Seth Mayes each had three for Central Lee.

The Hawks fall to 6-13 overall and have lost six of their last seven, five in a row. They stand at 6-9 in SEISC play. It was WACO's first conference win of the year and the Warriors are 3-16 on the year overall.
