Pontoosuc man arrested for firing gun in street

DALLAS CITY - Hancock County Sheriff, Scott Bentzinger, reports the arrest of Shawn L. DeHaven, age 49 of Pontoosuc, Illinois, for Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon and Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm.

On Monday at about 12:30 a.m., a call was received at theHancockCounty Sheriff's Office reporting a man with a gun in the middle of the street near the Circle K in Dallas City. Law enforcement arrived on scene and observed the man, Shawn DeHaven, allegedly holding the handgun and firing it while standing in the street. DeHaven and a female, Tammy Gittings, then entered Gittings residence.

A short time later, DeHaven and Gittings exited the residence and DeHaven was taken into custody without incident.

A search warrant was executed at the Gittings residence and the firearm was recovered. DeHaven is lodged in the Hancock County Jail awaiting his first appearance in court.

According to Bentzinger, DeHavenwasjustbeen released from jailon Monday, afterpleadingguilty to Aggravated Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Police Officer and after posting bond on an Iowa warrant.

DeHaven had been in jail on charges of fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, possession of methamphetamine and driving while license revoked since September 13. DeHaven currently has outstanding Iowa warrants.

The Dallas City Police Dept., Illinois State Police, Henderson County Sheriff's Office, Hancock County State's Attorney Office and Hancock County Sheriff's Office worked together to bring this incident to a peaceful ending. The Nauvoo Ambulance also assisted.

All subjects are to be considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
