KARE sets Black History month essay contest

PCC STAFF

KEOKUK – The Keokuk Association for Rights and Equality (KARE) is sponsoring writing contests during Black History month.

The organization hopes to raise awareness among Lee County young people of some of the lesser known Black Americans who have contributed to our nation in fields such as science, social justice, politics, business, and sports.

KARE wants students to be more aware of the obstacles that were overcome to reach the achievements. KARE will also give students the chance to explore the place of Black History and Black Americans in American History.

There will be several questions per grade level for students to select from. There will be three age categories with three prizes for each level. Grades 3-5 ($15, $10, $5), grades 6-8 ($40, $30, $20) and grades 9-12 ($75, $45, $25).  The contest is open to all students in Lee County.

Students or their parents/guardians may check with their school for the contest information or contact Mary Jo Riesberg at (319) 526-3160 or Sylvia Mills Echols at (319) 795-3215.
