Curtain falls on Hawks as Jackson goes for 30

WEST BURLINGTON - West Burlington senior Marvion Jackson scored early and often working inside on Central Lee's smaller front court in a 78-61 loss in Class 2A Substate 5 action Thursday night.

Jackson put up 30, 16 in the second half working against the Hawks interior defense of Derrick Denning, Kaleb Sanders and Bronson Sargent, but the Hawks couldn't contain the 6-5 senior, who didn't get to the free throw line one time in the affair.

West Burlington opened up a 20-13 lead with Austin Applegate throwing down a couple three balls as Central Lee sagged in trying to keep Jackson's productivity down. Jackson had just six in the first quarter.

The Falcons new to keep an eye on the perimeter with seniors Jaxon Betker and Dylan Stuecker both able to get hot at any time. The two combined for just 10 points in the first half. Denning had 14 in the half working in the paint.

Central trailed 39-28 at the end of the first half.

Colten Sherwood would heat up in the third period for the Falcons, keeping the Central Lee defense pulled out to the perimeter. The Falcons could then work an inside-out game with Jackson and Sherwood combining for 14 in the third as the Hawks fell behind by as many as 25 at the end of three.

Central Lee outscored the Falcons 23 to 15 in the final period, but couldn't erase the large deficit of the third and ended their season.

Denning had a game-high 16 for the Hawks. Sargent and Betker were also in double figures with 10 each. Sanders, Seth Mayes and Stuecker each had seven points for Central Lee. Kade Myhre and Maddox Doty each chipped in with two in the loss.

The Hawks finish the year at 7-15.
