Donovan W. “Don” Johnson, 90 years, of Fort Madison, Iowa died Tuesday, March 23, 2021.  He was born May 28, 1930 in Montrose, Iowa, a son of George Edward Sr. And Leota M. (Bailey) Johnson.  On December 19, 1954, he married Betty Lee Howe.  She preceded him in death.

Don owned and operated D-Signs, a custom sign business in the Fort Madison area.  In later years, he stayed active restoring neon signs and doing small custom projects.   Many of his signs and work are still hanging in Fort Madison today, including the sign at Alphas and the awnings at the Fort Colony Family Diner.  He enjoyed cooking, reading, and playing solitaire on his computer.   He was a member of the Fort Madison United Methodist Church. 

He is survived by his children, Debra (Matthew) Sheets and Michael (Mary) Johnson; grandchildren:  Heather Hagmeier, Hope Schroer, Grant Johnson, and Wesley Johnson; great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, including Darla (Shawn) Stromquist, Kim (Mike) Gregan, Tonya (late Ed) Newberry, and Phyllis (Duane) Gorrell; and other family and friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers: George, Dale, Gene, and Duane; three sisters: Corky, Dorothy, and Phyllis.  

Per his wishes, his body has been cremated.  Family and friends will gather to celebrate his life from 5:30 - 6:30 pm Monday, March 29 2021 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison.  A private burial will be Oakland Cemetery, Fort Madison.  A memorial has been established, contributions may be made directly to Barr Memorial Chapel, 1919 Ave F, Fort Madison, Iowa 52627.  Barr Memorial Chapel is honored to serve the Johnson family and an online guest book may be found at www.barrmemorialchapel.com.
