Supervisors to hear pitch on FM Marina

FORT MADISON – Lee County Supervisors will get a turn to look at the proposed $6 million Fort Madison Marina project Monday.

Supervisors will hear the presentation from Fort Madison Mayor Matt Mohrfeld as he continues to get the project in front of stakeholders.

The Fort Madison City Council approved a resolution is support of spending $1.5 million of city funds on the project. That could trigger an equal investment from Southeast Iowa Regional Riverboat Commission for waterside improvements including four new docks, two covered and two uncovered.

The commitment from the city also was required as part of a federal Community Project Fund administered as part of the American Recovery Plan through U.S. Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks’ congressional office.

The initial price tag on the project is $6 million, but Mohrfeld has been up front in saying the project could range to $11 million when all facets of a multi-phase plan have been implemented.

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funding is also coming into play in the re-dredging of the marina, which is set to begin in September. That will also require the pulling off of all current dock slips, which are set to be replaced.

The city is looking for a letter of support from the county to be used in applications for additional funding mechanisms including the congressional grant.

A multi-tiered public/private lease structure is planned to be in place for the 5-star marina with maintenance funding coming from proceeds of the brand new hospitality center that is being planned as new construction.

A poll is posted at Pen City Current’s Facebook page regarding the marina at the following link:

In other action, supervisors are scheduled:
• to hear a letter of support to have Optimae designated as a Community Mental Health Center for Jefferson, Des Moines and Lee counties. State officials have hedged on the designation as Optimae is a for-profit mental health center.
• hear an update on the county’s five-year plan from secondary roads.
