FM girls just miss first win of season

KEOKUK - The Fort Madison girls lost a tough 5-4 tennis match on the road in Keokuk Monday night and stand at 0-3 on the year.

Rachel Hellman, Camille Kruse and Lauren Otte all got wins in singles action.

Hellman won in the first-to-10 format at No. 2 singles with a 10-2 win over Jasmine Saunders. Kruse won a close 10-8 match over Kierra Huddleston at No. 4 singles, and Otte won 10-3 over Olivia Rule at No. 6.

Molly Knipe lost a 10-7 match to Emma Evans at No. 1 singles, while Kayla Kruse fell to Julia de Gala 10-6 at No. 3 singles. Abby Thompson downed Elizabeth Stuekerguergen 10-6 at No. 5, to leave the match tied heading into doubles play.

Knipe and Hellman fought off Evans and Huddleston at No. 1 doubles 11-10 stealing a 7-5 tiebreaker. But the Lady Hounds would fall at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to drop the match.

Saunders and de Gala downed Camille and Kayla Kruse 10-6, while Thompson and Rule beat Otte and Stuekerguergen 10-3.

“Again, we are getting closer. We were a couple of shots and points away from a win tonight. Saw some really good things in singles and doubles. Looking forward to building off it," said Head Coach Jeremy Swink.
