WEST POINT - The City of West Point has recently received a valuable Iowa LTAP Grant after an application was submitted in November of 2020. Iowa LTAP (Local Technical Assistance Program) is described on their web page as being dedicated to helping Iowa’s local governments keep up with growing demands on local roads, streets, bridges, and public transportation. The center provides technical and management assistance to Iowa’s local transportation officials through a variety of programs.

West Point has needed street safety devices to bolster the safety during work on the City’s streets, sealcoating the streets and working on infrastructure adjacent to the streets. West Point Public Works and West Point Utility Systems will both benefit from this generous grant.

The LTAP grant included a “Road Work Ahead”, “One Lane Road Ahead”, “Be Prepared to Stop” signs. Also in the package was 28-inch Traffic Cones, Type III Barricades, 42-inch channelizers, sign stands, and safety vests. These are all suitable for the slower speed city street work. There were 10 cities to be selected across Iowa for the grant package however Paul Albritton, the Technical Training Coordinator for Iowa State told us “The pricing on the package this year was low enough that two additional cities were included”. Thus, a total of twelve cities out of nearly 100 applicants received the LTAP Grant this year.

“City Employee safety is always a major concern of mine and whenever I can improve safety procedures, equipment or policy and if it doesn’t damage the budget; I will focus my eyes on that goal.” “The LTAP Grant was an opportunity to give my employees another layer of protection against a fast-paced lifestyle of fast cars, trucks and bikes and a world of distractions.

“The City of West Point is very thankful that the administration of Iowa LTAP for their foresight to see the need of safety assistance in the smaller communities and provides them with signage package that will benefit West Point for many years to come.”
