FORT MADISON - Fort Madison’s girls soccer team had a breakthrough in Monday’s win over Washington.
The Bloodhounds carried that momentum into a 10-0 win over Central Lee on Tuesday night at the Baxter Sports Complex.
That, coach Carrie Burken said, is “encouraging.”
Fort Madison (3-4) had lost three consecutive games by one goal before Monday’s 4-3 victory in the final seconds.
“I think yesterday breaking that streak, winning by a goal, was just a huge confidence boost for us,” Burken said. “We knew we could beat teams in our conference, we knew we could beat teams that we lost to, and I think yesterday proved that.”
The Bloodhounds kept rolling against the Hawks (2-3), striking for four goals in the first 14:01.
Claire Pothitakis, who had four goals, got three in a span of 8 1/2 minutes to start the game. Her first goal came 40 seconds in, and the Bloodhounds were in command.
Coree James scored with 25:59 left in the half, then Taylor Crabtree added two goals and Pothitakis scored her fourth to give the Bloodhounds a 7-0 lead at halftime.
Pothitakis has 13 goals to lead the Bloodhounds.
“She’s playing really great,” Burken said. “It’s not just her skills, and her offense. She really just brings a presence in the midfield — working back, winning balls, connecting on passes. She’s working really hard for our team right now, and you can see it.”
Crabtree scored to open the second half. Brandy Walker scored to make it 9-0, then Mary Kate Bendlage’s penalty kick with 11:30 to play ended the game.
Burken was able to move players around to different positions in the second half.
“It’s nice to be able to go up to try to be able to score a goal,” Burken said. “I think sometimes when you play a different position, you get an appreciation for what your teammates do. I think they got that today.”
Fort Madison had 26 shots on goal.
