Task force makes four felony drug arrests

LEE COUNTY - The Lee County Narcotics Task Force reports the arrest of multiple Keokuk and Fort Madison residents on felony and misdemeanor drug charges.

Kenneth Howell, 59, of Keokuk, was arrested on May 6th, at his residence in the 1100 Block of Concert St. in Keokuk. Howell is charged with delivery of more than 5 grams of methamphetamine 2nd or Subsequent Offense a Class B felony; possession with Intent to feliver less than 5 grams of methamphetamine 2nd or Subsequent Offense a Class C felony; drug tax stamp violation a Class D felony; maintaining a drug house, an aggravated misdemeanor, unlawful possession of prescription pills a serious misdemeanor, and possession of drug paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor.

HOWELL

Two Keokuk, Iowa juveniles were also arrested on May 7th, 2021 at Hy-Vee in Keokuk. The juveniles were both charged with possession with intent to deliver more than 5 grams of marijuana a Class D felony; drug tax stamp violation a Class D felony; maintaining a drug house, an aggravated misdemeanor; unlawful possession of prescription pills, a serious misdemeanor; and possession of drug paraphernalia. a simple misdemeanor.

The arrest of Kenneth Louis Howell stems from an ongoing multi agency investigation of Howell selling methamphetamine throughout the southeast Iowa area. The arrests of the two juveniles stem from a search warrant conducted in reference to Kenneth Howell’s investigation.

The Southeast Iowa Narcotics Task Force (SEINT); Department of Narcotics Enforcement; Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Keokuk Police Department, Lee County GHOST, Department of Juvenile Court and the Lee County Attorney’s Office, assisted the Lee County Narcotics Task Force in this investigation.

The task force is also reporting the arrest of a Fort Madison man on felony and misdemeanor drug charges.

Mitchell Helmick, 34, of Fort Madison, was arrested on May 5th, in the 1600 block of 20th St. in Fort Madison. Helmick was placed under arrest for warrants for voluntary absence from custody and a judgment entry/mittimus. Helmick was also charged with possession with intent to deliver more than 5 grams of methamphetamine 2nd or subsequent offense, a Class B Felony; possession of controlled substance 3rd or subsequent offense- marijuana, a Class D felony; drug tax stamp violation, a Class D felony and possession of drug paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor.

HELMICK

The arrest of Helmick stems from Officers with the Fort Madison Police Department responding to the area for a welfare check regarding a man in a vehicle next to the railroad tracks slumped over. Narcotics were located on Helmick’s person and the Lee County Narcotics Task Force was contacted to assist in furthering the investigation.  

The Fort Madison Police Department and the Lee County Attorney’s Office, assisted the Lee County Narcotics Task Force in this investigation.

All the defendants listed above are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
