Joann R. Messmer,83, of Fort Madison passed away on Friday, May 14, 2021 at 6:52 AM at Oakview Nursing Home.

   She was born on April 14, 1938 in Ft. Madison to Woodrow and Belvia Boyer Brown.  Joann married Burt Smalley and they later divorced.  She then married Raymond Lunn in 1963 and he preceded her in death.  Joann and John Messmer married in 1987 and he also preceded her in death.  Joann was a cook at several area restaurants and was a member of Burlington Foursquare Church.  She enjoyed community bible study, the Gaither’s and watching Elvis impersonators.  Most of all she loved spending time with her family.

   Survivors include; one daughter, Margie (Dennis) Gnann of Wever; two sons, Ralph Smalley of Wisconsin and Jim Smalley of Iowa City; fourteen grandchildren, several great grandchildren and one sister, Ruby Degen of Ft. Madison; one son in law, Jim Boyle of Ft. Madison.   She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands; a son, Bill Lunn and a daughter, Joy Boyle.

   The memorial service will be held on Friday, May 21, 2021 at 11 AM at Burlington Foursquare Church with Pastor Sam Fratt officiating.  The family will meet with friends from 10 AM until the time of the service at the church.  Per her wishes, cremation has been entrusted to King-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory.
