Lorene M. Wheeler, 93, of West Point, Iowa, passed away at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, May 15, 2021, at the Kensington in Fort Madison, Iowa.

She was born on November 25, 1927, in rural West Point, Iowa, the daughter of Otto J. and Evelyn B. (Rauenbuehler) Moeller. On June 25, 1949, she married Gerald H. “Junior” Wheeler. He preceded her in death on June 28, 2010.

She is survived by five daughters: Linda (Ron) McGuire of Shueyville, Iowa, Jan (Jeff) Beard of Gainesville, Florida, Sandy (Gene) Mehmert of St. Paul, Iowa, Cindy (Dave) Hines of Mt. Prospect, Illinois and Angie (Leroy) Wagner of Waukee, Iowa; son-in-law: Brad Vandenberg of Donnellson, Iowa; twelve grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; one sister: Velda Vonderhaar of West Point, Iowa; three sisters-in-law: Helen Moeller of West Point, Iowa, Joan Menke of West Point, Iowa and Barbara Stanaway of West Des Moines, Iowa. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, cousins and her Kensington family.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Gerald; daughter: Sue Vandenberg; one grandchild: Jack Beard; one brother: Clarence Moeller, one brother: Marvin in infancy and one brother-in-law: Gene Vonderhaar.

Lorene was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society of the church the Daughter’s of Isabella and Boots & Umbrellas Card Club. She enjoyed bowling (was in the West Point Palm Bowl Hall of Fame), playing cards, flowers, gardening and most of all, her grandchildren and familyFriends may call after 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 19, 2021, at Schmitz Funeral Home in West Point where the family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to to 7:00 p.m. A parish rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. and a Christian wake service will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, May 20, 2021, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Point with Father Dennis Hoffman as celebrant. Mass will be live streamed on the church Facebook page and posted on her obituary “Tribute Wall” on our website following the service at: www.schmitzfuneralhomes.com.
Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.
A memorial has been established in her memory for St. Mary’s Catholic Church for building maintenance.
