WEST BURLINGTON - Sophomore Kane Williams gave up just three hits going the distance for the Bloodhounds Wednesday as they opened the season with a 9-0 win over West Burlington on the road.

Williams fanned eight Falcons against just one walk in getting the win.

Vasin Thurman held Fort Madison at the plate going 2-of-3 with a home run and two RBI and three runs scored. Tate Johnson was 2-of-4 with a couple doubles and 3 RBI for the Hounds.

Fort Madison opened the scoring in the top of the 3rd when Landes Williams drew a walk off West Burlington starter Hayden Vandenberg. Vandenberg got Jason Thurman swinging, but Williams stole second and then came around to score when Vasin Thurman singled to deep short with Williams going on the pitch. After a Colton Engeman walk, Matt Hopper grounded back to Vandenberg on the mound to end the threat.

The Bloodhounds would get four more in the top of the fourth off Jace Figeuero, who came on in relief of Vandenberg after the 3rd. Figeuero walked the first two batters and Garrett Hannum laid down a nice bunt to load the bases.

Landes Williams sacrificed to center scoring Kane Williams and then Figeuero plunked both Jason and Vasin Thurman before giving up a three-run double to Tate Johnson to center. After another walk to Engeman, Hopper grounded out to end the rally.

The Hounds would add three more in the sixth when both Thurmans and Johnson all reached in order and came around to score to make it 8-0.

In the seventh, Vasin Thurman gave the Hounds an insurance run when he took a 0-2 Ryne Rogers offering over the left field fence to set the final score at 9-0.

Vandenberg took the loss giving up one earned run while striking out seven. Figeuero, Kaleb Allen and Rogers combined to give up eight runs all earned while striking out one and walking eight.

The Bloodhounds are scheduled to play at Burlington Notre Dame Thursday night.
