DAVENPORT - The Fort Madison Bloodhounds started the year with a string of tough losses including at No. 4 West Burlington on Wednesday, and two losses to Davenport North on Friday.
The Hounds suffered 10-run setbacks in both games of a double header with the Wildcats in Davenport 15-5 in five innings and 14-4 in six innings.
Lexi Whaley homered in the opener going 2-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
The Hounds put up two runs in the first and third innings and one in the fifth, but Davenport North put up a five-spot in the bottom of the first and added two in the third and four each in the fourth and fifth to set the 10-run rule after five innings.
Neeley Rehm also had two hits for the Lady Hounds. Kylee Cashman, Erika Kruse, and Lauryn Helmick each had a hit. Cashman had two runs scored in the opener.
Rehm took the loss going two innings and giving up 5 runs all earned on three hits. Kruse pitched 2 2/3 giving up 10 runs on 7 hits.
In the night cap, the Hounds were held to five hits, but held Davenport North to 1-1 tie through four innings. Fort Madison would go up 4-1 in the fifth when Whaley hit a first-pitch, one-out drive to left field for a double that scored Emily Steffensmeier and Helmick.
Whaley would come around to score on a fielder's choice to second.
But the Wildcats would blow things open in the bottom half with eight runs, all coming with two outs.
Helmick would give up a walk with two outs and then a single, and then the floodgates opened with back-to-back singles followed by a double and an error at short. Three more singles plated three more runs before the Hounds got out of the inning when Yanna Roberts tried to stretch her single into a double up 9-4.
Fort Madison would go down in order in the top of the sixth and then Davenport North would start with the bases loaded on three straight singles. A walk would force in a run and then senior Jordan Burch would hit a walk-off grand slam to right field for the 14-4 lead and 10-run stoppage.
Logan Johnson, Helmick, Whaley, Rehm and Aija Jenkins all had hits for Fort Madison.
Helmick took the loss in the second game going 5 1/3 giving up 14 runs, 10 earned on 13 hits while striking out two and walking three.
