Bloodhounds split in conference opener

WASHINGTON - Four straight singles in the bottom of the sixth inning turned into two runs as Washington escaped with a 4-3 win in the night cap of a doubleheader with Fort Madison in Southeast Conference baseball action Thursday night.

The Bloodhounds won the opener 7-4 behind Reiburn Turnbull's two-hit 3 RBI performance. Kane Williams and Jason Thurman split duties on the mound with Williams starting and giving up all four runs earned on seven hits.

Thurman came on in relief and threw 3 1/3 surrendering two hits and striking out one in earning the save.

Fort Madison scored two runs in the 1st, 3rd and 4th inning and added an insurance run in the sixth.

The Demons' Lucas Kroll walked the first two batters of the game and then got two outs before Turnbull laced a single to right field scoring Jason Thurman and Landes Williams. Washington would counter with two in the bottom half off with three of the first four hitters reaching base.

Vasin Thurman and Tate Johnson opened the third with a couple singles. Thurman would come around to score on another Turnbull single to center. Johnson would score on a sacrifice fly by Colton Engeman. Washington would answer with a run in the bottom half, but Fort Madison would put up a couple more in the fourth.

Aiden Pennock would get hit by a pitch and Landes Williams would draw a walk on four straight to put runners at 1st and 2nd with no outs. Jason Thurman would move Pennock to 3rd with a fly out to right. Williams would swipe second to put both runners in scoring position with one out. Vasin Thurman would then walk to load the bases for Tate Johnson who grounded into a fielder's choice at short scoring Pennock with the game-winner. Williams would come around to score on a wild pitch for a 6-3 Bloodhound lead.

Washington again would get one in the bottom half to make it 6-4, but the Hounds would tack on an extra run in the sixth when Pennock came around to score from second on a mishandled Jason Thurman single to left.

Jason and Vasin Thurman, Johnson and Garrett Hannum all had hits for Fort Madison in the opener. Landes Williams scored two runs in the win.

In the night cap, Landes Williams took the mound for Fort Madison and spotted the Demons a 2-0 lead after the first two innings. Fort Madison would cut it to a 2-1 lead after three. Matt Hopper drew a walk and Pennock singled to left to put two on with no outs. Landes Williams would move everyone up with a hard single to center.

After an infield fly by Jason Thurman, Vasin Thurman hit a sac fly to center scoring Hopper, but Pennock would get gunned down trying to steal second to end the inning.

Fort Madison would go up 3-2 with two runs in the top of the fifth. Pennock walked, Landes Williams singled again and Thurman, who's getting hit about once a game, wore one to load the bases. Vasin Thurman would drive another one in on a fielder's choice to short scoring Pennock and moving Williams to third. A balk by Washington's Kole Williams would plate Landes Williams before a groundout ended the threat.

Williams would get the Demons 1-2-3 in the bottom of the fifth, but Washington would go head for good in the bottom of the sixth after Hannum was stranded in top half.

The first four hitter reached on singles forcing Williams from the mound in lieu of Jason Thurman. Thurman then gave up a single scoring Kroll and a courtesy runner with the game winner.

Landes Williams opened the top of the seventh with his third hit of the game, but was forced at second on Jason Thurman's grounder to short. Thurman would move into scoring position on wild pitch. He would move to third on a fielding error at third, but Johnson would fan and Turnbull would ground out to third to end the game.

Williams went five innings giving up four runs, three earned on five hits, while striking out five and walking four. Thurman gave a up a hit in relief. Turnbull, Engeman, Hannum and Pennock had the other hits for the 4-2 Hounds.

Fort Madison has outscored their opponents 33-18 on the year with the two losses coming by just three runs total.

The Hounds take on Keokuk Monday night in Fort Madison in a double header.
