Crusaders rally for win over New London

NEW LONDON – Kayla Box lined a 2-run double with two out to highlight a 4-run sixth inning propelling Holy Trinity Catholic to a 5-3 win over host New London Thursday night.

Kelli Meierotto and Rachel Menke both got on to start the six, but Haile Cain and Anna Sobczak both grounded out to third base before Brooke Mueller extended the inning with a two-out single to left.

Mary Hellige would then draw a walk and Menke would come around to score on a wild pitch before Box’s shot to right center scored Mueller and Hellige for a 5-1 lead. A ground out ended the inning.

Hellige would get the first two outs in the bottom half of the sixth but gave up a couple singles to Morgan Jones and Emma Nye before getting the third out on a grounder force out at second.

In the top of the seventh, Meierotto would reach on a one-out single to left. Menke would move her to second on a sacrifice bunt. Then Cain reached on a fielding error at short, moving Meierotto to third with two outs, but a strikeout would keep the Crusaders off the board in the 7th.

Hellige would entice a lead-off ground out to Elly Manning in the bottom of the seventh, but a walk and then a single to Ashlyn McSorley put two on with one out. Marah Hartrick then tripled to right scoring Claire Jones and McSorley bringing the tying run to the plate.

But a snap throw from Mueller down the line to third caught McSorley leaning to clean the bases. Natalie Burden then grounded to Menke at first, but the ball was mishandled allowing Burden to reach safely. Sophie Malott then singled to right moving Burden to third and bringing the winning run to the plate with two outs.

Hellige would get Emma Nye to swing at the first pitch and fly out to Cain in center to preserve the win.

Holy Trinity’s other run came in the top of the 2nd when Cain singled to short scoring Laura Mehmert who had reached on a two-out single. Meierotto would reach on a dropped third strike and Menke would work a walk to load the base in front of Cain.

Hellige went all seven innings scattering nine hits and giving up just two earned runs while striking out three and walking three. She also went 2-of-3 at the plate with a run scored.

Meierotto also had a two hit night with a run scored. Mehmert, Menke, Box, Mueller, and Cain all had hits for the 3-2 Crusaders. HTC travels to Van Buren (3-1) on Monday at 7 p.m.
