Lady Hounds drop two at Washington

WASHINGTON - Fort Madison scored two runs in the top of the 7th to tie up the Demons, but an error in the bottom half gave Washington the game and a sweep of the Lady Hounds 3-0, 8-7 Thursday night in Washington.

Fort Madison opened the 7th inning of the night cap with singles from Erika Kruse and Emily Steffensmeier. Aija Jenkins then moved the runners over with a sacrifice ground out at first. Taylor Johnson then singled to third scoring Kylee Roen, courtesy running for Kruse.

Neeley Rehm then singled to center scoring Steffensmeier to tie the game at 7, but Johnson was thrown out on a quick force at 2nd. Lexi Whaley flied out to center field to end the top half of seven.

Kruse then gave up three singles to start the bottom half of the seventh with no outs. Washington's Bella Salazar then hit into an infield fly to Rehm at second for the first out, but a throw trying to double off a runner got away allowing the winning run to score.

Fort Madison opened the game with a couple runs in the top of the 1st. Kylee Cashman singled with one out and then stole second and third before scoring on a wild pitch. Rehm flied out to center before Whaley walked and Lauryn Helmick singled.

Logan Johnson would follow with a single to left plating Whaley for a 2-0 lead. Gabrielle Ruble would draw a walk to load the bases, but a strike out would end the threat.

Washington would put up one run in the bottom of the 2nd and four in the third. Kruse would walk the lead off hitter in the fourth and then hit Kellie Dallmeyer before a grounder moved the two into scoring position. Cara Linnenkamp then singled to center scoring both runners.

A bunt for a base hit put two on with one out and a grounder by Emma Herr moved the runners up. Elyse Hunt then singled to Emily Steffensmeier in center scoring two more for a 5-2 Washington lead.

Fort Madison would get one back in the fourth and two more in the top of the fifth to tie things up at five. Kruse hit a 2 RBI single to center scoring Lauryn Helmick and Whaley with two outs. The Hounds would get another single from Steffensmeier to put two on, but a strike out ended the rally.

Washington would respond with two more runs in the bottom half. A lead-off single was followed by two straight outs before Kruse surrendered back-to-back walks to load the bases Salazar then singled to center scoring two to give the Demons a 7-5 lead setting up the 7th inning.

Lauryn Helmick went 3-of-4 to lead the Hounds at the plate in the opener. Kruse and Steffensmeier both had two hits, while Cashman, Taylor Johnson, Rehm, and Logan Johnson all had hits for Fort Madison.

In the opener, Fort Madison outhit the Demons 6-4, but five errors allowed three runs to score.

Rehm went the distance giving up just four hits and no earned runs, while striking out five and walking three. She also went 2-of-3 at the plate. Logan Johnson, Kruse, Steffensmeier, and Beebe had the other hits for the Hounds (1-6).
