Lady Hounds sweep Blue Devils in Davenport

DAVENPORT - The Fort Madison girls scored in nine of 14 innings of softball Tuesday night in a sweep of Davenport Central in the Quad Cities.

The Bloodhounds got their first doubleheader sweep of the year behind the 7-of-9 hitting of sophomore Neeley Rehm, who went 5-of-5 in the opener.

Lauryn Helmick got the win in the first game going the full seven innings giving up 10 hits and three runs, two earned on eight strikeouts.

Fort Madison scored in the first four innings including a four-run fourth to go up 9-3 before Helmick shut down the Blue Devils after a one-run 3rd.

In the first inning the Hounds opened the game with the bases loaded and no outs, but managed just one run when Rehm came around to score on a throwing error by Central's catcher on a double play attempt after forcing Kylee Cashman at home.

Davenport Central would take a brief lead in the bottom half when Helmick gave up three singles to start the bottom half surrendering one run, and then an error in center allowed another run in.

Helmick would dial it in from that point on, only allowing one more run in the third on an RBI single with two outs for a 5-3 Fort Madison lead.

Cashman started the fourth with a triple and scored on Rehm's single. After a flyout and strikeout, the Hounds went back to work with a single from Erika Kruse and a 2 RBI double from Logan Johnson. Aija Jenkins then hit her first pitch to center for an RBI single before a ground out ended the inning 9-3 Hounds.

The Hounds would tack on four more in the top of the 7th highlighted by a two-run double to center from Kruse that scored Ella Ruble and Rehm.

In the night cap, Fort Madison broke out with seven runs in the first inning which proved to be enough for the win.

Kruse went the distance for the Hounds surrendering six runs, all earned on six hits. She struck out six and walked four.

Freshman Lexi Whaley went 4-of-5 with two runs scored and an RBI in the win. Helmick was 3 of 3 with four runs scored and 3 RBI. Emily Steffensmeier, Allyson Helmick, Rehm and Kruse all had multiple hit games.

Fort Madison opened the game with six hits in the first seven at bats. Whaley's one-out triple scored Emily Steffensmeier, but Rehm was thrown out at home. A double from Kruse scored Lauryn Helmick. Jenkins would score on an error by the pitcher forcing the Blue Devlis starter from the game.

Kendall Beebe then singled to score Ruble and Allyson Helmick would single to load things up again. After a flyout, Rehm would single to left scoring McKenna Cashman to make it 7-0.

Both teams would score a run in the second and Davenport would put up two in the bottom of the fourth.

Fort Madison would get a two-out, two-run double from Lauryn Helmick to highlight a 3-run 5th that put the Bloodhounds up 10-5. They would add two insurance runs in the top of the seventh on two sacrifice fly outs after the first three hitters reached.

Fort Madison improves to 3-6 on the year after Monday's games with Keokuk were suspended due to weather. The girls travel to Fairfield for a Southeast Conference matchup double header starting at 5:30 p.m.
