WEST POINT - Wapello got three runs in the fifth and sixth innings to down Holy Trinity Catholic 7-2 Wednesday night in Southeast Iowa Superconference softball action at South Park.

Holy Trinity tied the game at 1 in the bottom of the third when Rachel Menke found home plate on a wild pitch with one out. But the Arrows would turn a double play getting Brooke Mueller at first on a grounder to short, and then Anna Sobczak was gunned down trying to get home on the throw to first to end the threat.

Wapello (5-5) looked to add to their lead in the top of the third when the first two runners reached after being hit by pitches with no outs. But Kayla Box would take a grounder, step on the bag and fire to second for a double play of their own.

Crusaders pitcher Mary Hellige then got Quinn Veach to fly out to end the inning.

Both teams went three-up, three-down in the fourth and then Wapello broke things open in the top half of the fifth.

With Ada Boysen reaching on an error and advancing to second on the throw. Toni Bohlen lined out to Hellige in the circle for the second out.

Then an error in left would allow Serah Shafer to reach and Boysen to score for a 2-1 lead. Morgan Richenburger then singled to center scoring Shafer. Veach then kept the inning alive with a flyball to left that was mishandled allowing Richenburger to score before a ground out ended the inning with the Arrows up 4-1

Holy Trinity would cut it to two at 4-2 when Haile Cain doubled to center scoring Laura Mehmert with one out. Sobczak would draw a walk to load the bases with one out, but Mueller would pop out to second and Hellige would pop out to third for the third out.

A fielding error put Aliyah Lolling on to open the sixth. Hellige would work a strike out for the first out, but would surrender an RBI triple to left and then back-to-back singles driving in two more runs to set the final at 7-2.

The Crusaders had something cooking in the bottom of the 7th. After a strikeout to open the half, Cain and Sobczak both singled, but two infield flyouts would put a cap on the game.

Hellige threw 118 pitches in taking the loss. She gave up eight hits and seven runs, only three earned, while striking out six and walking none.

Sobczak was 3-for-3 at the plate. Cain was 2-of-4 with an RBI. Menke had the other hit for the 3-5 (2-4) Crusaders, who travel to Columbus on Friday for a 7 p.m. game.
