FAIRFIELD - A four-run top of the sixth wasn't enough to trigger a split of a doubleheader with Fairfield for the Lady Hounds Thursday night on the road.

Fairfield won the opener with a 9-0 shut out and the Trojans had Fort Madison shut out through five innings in the night cap before the Hounds rallied for four runs to take a 4-1 lead into the bottom half of the sixth.

Fort Madison's Lexi Whaley singled to lead off the sixth. Lauryn Helmick would fly out to left before Erika Kruse would double to center moving Whaley to third. Logan Johnson would draw a walk to load the bases with one out.

Emily Steffensmeier then grounded into a fielder's choice at short. The throw came late to home allowing Whaley to score. The throw then went back to try and double off a runner on the base paths, but an error on the throw allowed Kruse to come around to score and left Johnson at 3rd and Steffensmeier at 2nd.

Taylor Johnson then grounded into a fielder's choice at 3rd. Logan Johnson was thrown out at home and Steffensmeier moved to third. Kylee Roen then singled to to right scoring Steffensmeier and Taylor Johnson landed at 3rd for a 3-1 lead.

Kylee Cashman then ripped a single to left scoring Johnson before Neeley Rehm grounded out to end the inning with Fort Madison up 4-1.

Fairfield would then get three runs in the bottom half to tie things up. Danielle Breen would home on the first pitch she saw out to left. A single, a pop out and another single would put runners at the corners. A ground out to short scored a run and moved Coty Engle to second. Hannah Simpson singled to right scoring Engle, to tie things up.

Fort Madison went 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh.

Fairfield started the bottom with three singles to load the bases. After an infield fly out, Bailey Hird grounded hard to short allowing Peyton McCabe to come in with game-winner.

Kruse was 3-of-4 at the plate with a run scored. Kylee Cashman went 2 of 3 with an RBI. Whaley and Roen had the other hits for Fort Madison. Helmick went the distance for the Hounds giving up 13 hits and allowed five runs, four earned, while walking out two.

In the opener, Fairfield rolled the Hounds with three runs each in the second and fourth innings. They plated two insurance runs in the fifth to put things away.
