Lady Hounds split with Washington

FORT MADISON - A four-run sixth inning gave Fort Madison the win in the opener of twinbill with Washington in southeast Iowa softball action Monday night.

The Bloodhounds won the first game 8-4, but dropped the nightcap 2-5. Fort Madison sits at 3-7 in the Southeast Conference and 6-11 overall.

Kendall Beebe and Allyson Helmick drew walks to open the sixth. Kylee Cashman then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over. Emily Steffensmeier would then single to center scoring Taylor Johnson courtesy running for Beebe.

Neeley Rehm, who went 2-for-3 in the opener with 2 RBI doubled to left scoring Helmick and Steffensmeier to make it 7-4 Fort Madison. Logan Johnson would follow with another single to left scoring Aija Jenkins who was running for Rehm, to set the final at 8-4

Washington scored four runs in the top of the fourth after spotting the Hounds a 2-0 lead.

Rehm gave up three walks and two singles and the Hounds committed two errors before getting a single out in the top of the fourth.

The Demons' Ava Turner singled on a liner to left to score two runs to put Washington up 4-2. A fielder's choice would get Cameron Malichky on a force at home and then the Lady Hounds would get out of the inning when a liner to second resulted in a doubling off of the runner at 1st.

Fort Madison would plate two in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 4.

Rehm would walk and Jenkins, courtesy running, would advance to third on a Logan Johnson double to left. After Erika Kruse popped out, Jenkins would score on a wild pitch and Johnson would advance to third. Lexi Whaley would then ground out to short scoring Johnson before a strikeout ended the inning. Rehm held the Lady Demons in check the fifth through the seventh to get the win.

She went all seven innings giving up just four hits and four runs, three earned while striking out five and walking six.

Logan Johnson went 3-for-3 with 2 RBI and a run scored to lead Fort Madison at the plate.

In the night cap, the game was scoreless entering the bottom of the fifth when Fort Madison put up a run.

Washington would come back with a run in the top of the sixth and hold the Hounds scoreless in the bottom half. The Demons then woke up in the top of the seventh with the game tied at 1-1.

They put up four runs with no outs as Hounds starter Lauryn Helmick gave up a walk and two singles to load the bases. Halle Cuddeback then singled to Beebe in right scoring one. Another single to center by Malichky plated two more runs, and then a fielder's choice resulted in the fourth run of the inning. Helmick would get a strikeout and a ground out to end the inning with the Hounds down 5-1.

Fort Madison would get a run in the bottom half after starting the frame with two singles and no outs. But Rehm would ground out to second, and the Demons threw home and caught Cashman trying to score from second on the play.

Johnson then singled on a liner to right scoring Emily Steffensmeier, but a fly out to center would end the game.

Helmick gave up nine hits and five runs all earned, while striking out eight and walking two. Steffensmeier was 3-for-3 with two runs scored. McKenna Cashman was 2-for-3 at the plate.

Fort Madison travels to Muscatine for a doubleheader in non-conference action Tuesday night. Fort Madison plays a doubleheader in Keokuk on Thursday and then travels to Cedar Rapids for the Linn-Mar/Alburnette tourney starting Friday morning.
