Central Lee squads fall to West Burlington

WEST BURLINGTON - West Burlington got the best of Central Lee in Southeast Iowa Superconference baseball and softball matchups Thursday night in West Burlington.

The Hawks fell to West Burlington 7-4 in the boys game, while the Lady Falcons shut out the surging Central Lee girls 12-0 on the girls diamond.

In the boys' game West Burlington jumped out to a 3-0 lead when Gabe Zurita pulled one over the left field fence with two on and two out in the bottom of the first off starter Corbin Pohren.

The Hawks would come back to tie things after putting up a run in the second on Tanner DeMoss' homer off Ty Hill to lead off the second, and then two in the third.

Corey Jones would get plunked to lead off the third and move to second on Tommy Eschman's groundout fielder's choice to Hayden Vandenberg at third. Kade Myhre would draw a walk on four straight and then Alex Sandoval would single to center to load the bases.

DeMoss then slapped a grounder that was mishandled at short allowing Jones and Myhre to come around to score tying the game. Denning then grounded out to third to end the threat.

West Burlington would get a two-out double from Vandenberg to left and Zurita would wear on to put two on in the bottom of third, but Ty HIll would fly out to center for the third out.

Central Lee would break the tie in the top of the fourth. The Hawks would load the bases with two outs on Zurita's second error at short. Then a passed ball allowed Jones to come around to score before Myhre lined to center to end the top half.

West Burlington would get a little breathing room in the bottom of the fourth with three runs. Then Vandenberg would come on in relief in the sixth and strike out four of six hitters while not giving up a hit in preserving the win.

The Hawks fall to 8-8 on the year, 5-7 in the Superconference. They travel to Eldon to take on Cardinal (9-7) on Tuesday. The Falcons slip over .500 on the year at 10-9 and are 5-6 in SEISC South play.

In the girls game, the No. 4 ranked Lady Falcons shutout Central Lee 12-0.

West Burlington's Lauren Summers stymied the Lady Hawks in three innings giving up three hits and fanning one. Summers also homered twice in the game going 3 for 3 with 4 RBI and a run scored. Lyndsey Kelley also went 3 for 3 for the Falcons.

Central Lee surrendered five runs in the first, four in the second and gave up 3 runs in the third invoking the 12-run rule after three innings.

Turner took the loss for Central Lee going 1 2/3 giving up nine runs, eight earned on nine hits.

The girls play a double header with Burlington today at the Bubble in the Burlington Rec Plex. The game was moved due to poor field conditions at Central Lee.
