OTTUMWA - The 12th-ranked Ottumwa Bulldogs handed the Fort Madison Bloodhounds a 5-3 loss Friday night in Ottumwa.

The Bulldogs used four pitchers to one-hit the Bloodhounds, but a combined eight walks allowed Fort Madison to stay in the game against the CIML's top team

Ottumwa stands at 14-0 in CIML conference play and is 23-5 on the season and ranked just 12th in state in Class 4A despite being a conference with five Des Moines metroplex schools.

Fort Madison trailed 5-0 going into the top half of the seventh when Ottumwa's Mitch Wood issued three straight walks to load the bases with no outs. Landes Williams then wore a pitch to bring in Aidan Pennock and move everyone up a bag.

That prompted the Bulldogs to bring in Jackson Saunders who gave up a sacrifice fly to Jason Thurman to center scoring Colton Engeman. Vasin Thurman would follow suit in the next at bat scoring Kane Williams on the second out.

Reiburn Turnbull would then line out to center to end the game.

Ottumwa put up one run in the third and two each in the fourth and fifth, before Kane Williams came on in relief of starter Garrett Hannum. Hannum gave up five runs all earned on five hits while striking out one. Pennock had the lone hit for Fort Madison on a single to right field with no outs in the top of the fifth.

Williams would draw a one-out walk in the inning to put two on, but a strike out and ground out ended the only real other threat the Bloodhounds posed.

Fort Madison falls to 16-4 on the year and is still one game back of Burlington in the Southeast Conference at 10-2. They are scheduled to host Davis County Tuesday night. Wednesday's game with Central Lee has been canceled and replaced with a 6:30 game at Keokuk.

Fort Madison slipped into the top 15 in Class 3A last week in the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association Poll as one of five teams receiving votes under the top 10.
